We encourage parents to bring their children to our office to receive cavity treatment for kids anytime their child complains of a toothache. Very often, a simple toothache is actually the body's way of alerting a person that there is a problem. The problem is typically tooth decay or an infection.
Calling our office right away allows us to conduct an examination, determine if the child is suffering from decay and to treat the problem before it can spread or become worse.
Parents also need to keep an eye out for bleeding gums and hard lumps in the gums since these can indicate a more serious infection or gum disease. These are issues that require urgent treatment, something we provide in our dental clinic. Just be sure to call for treatment right away to save the child's oral health.
When a child first complains of a toothache it is important to bring them to our office right away. The longer that decay remains in the mouth, the more likely that it will spread and infect the interior of the tooth.
At that point, a child may need a root canal. While a root canal is effective, it is a far more extensive and serious procedure. Treating basic cavities is far easier for the child and parent than going through a complete root canal.
To complete cavity treatments for kids, we first examine the tooth and may take image imaging to determine the extent of the decay. Then, we will numb the area so the child does not feel anything. At that point, we will remove the decayed portion of the tooth. This is done carefully but quickly. Afterwards, we will clean that area of the tooth and then fill the cavity or hole that has been left by removing the tooth decay.
We recommend filling the cavity using a tooth-colored material. This ensures that the tooth looks completely natural and it will be impossible to tell the child has a cavity. This is our recommendation because we believe if a child's teeth appear perfectly healthy, it will be good for their confidence and self-esteem.
While silver fillings are still possible in our office, we use the tooth-colored ones because they are strong, durable and also look natural.
If you are unsure if your child has a cavity, call our office anyway. We can examine them, you can ask questions and we can answer them. If the cavity can be treated right away we will do so. If the infection is larger or the damage too severe, we may recommend a dental crown instead. In any case, the best way to receive information is to call our office and schedule an examination.
