Schedule a Kids Dental Cleaning Before School is in Full Swing

Has your child come in for a kids dental cleaning lately? If not, now is an excellent time to schedule an appointment. With the school year starting shortly, it is important for children to have their teeth cleaned before they become too immersed in classes and after-school activities to take a timeout for the dentist.

There are many reasons to schedule an appointment for professional teeth cleaning service at the beginning of the school year, including:

    #1. Tooth decay is common

Tooth decay is so common that it is labeled as an infectious disease by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is one of the leading causes for children missing days from school and nearly all children are impacted by tooth decay. The best way to prevent it is to visit the dentist twice a year. By cleaning a child's teeth, we can remove the plaque and tartar that they are unable to take away through at home brushing.

With cracks and gaps between teeth, it can be difficult for children to do a thorough enough job to prevent decay. In our office, we have the benefit of being able to see all areas of the mouth and the tools that are necessary for conducting a truly deep cleaning. By doing so, we can reduce the likelihood of a child developing cavities.

#2. They could miss time from school

If a child does develop a cavity or dental infection it will lead to them missing time from school. This can interfere with important dates and activities and make it harder for them to pass exams. Scheduling an appointment at the beginning of school allows us to determine if there are any oral health problems.

We can treat any issues early on before it becomes a health emergency. Otherwise, a child may end up suffering from significant dental pain that requires an emergency appointment regardless of what is happening at school.

#3. We can protect their teeth during sports

While we cannot be on the soccer field or basketball court with your child, we can still help to protect their teeth while they are playing or practicing sports. This is done by providing them with a mouth guard to wear on those occasions. Using a mold and impression that is taken of the teeth, we can have the mouth guard created to be a perfect fit. This way it will remain securely in place while they are playing without the fear of it becoming loose.

The guard creates a barrier so that if something were to collide with their face, the teeth would be protected, unlikely to crack, chip or fall out. A guard is also recommended for any children that wear braces. If something collides with their face when wearing braces, both the teeth and braces will sustain damage.

This can lead to delays in the total treatment time. Additionally, the inside of the lips and gums can become cut up when a child wears braces and is in an accident. It is far better to simply wear a mouth guard.
