Schedule Kids Dental Check-up When Candy Leads to Toothaches
If your children complain of pain when they are eating candy this Halloween, it could be a sign that they need a kids dental check-up. This is because teeth that are beginning to suffer from decay are going to be more sensitive. Therefore, when a child eats candy, the sugar is likely to cause irritation. This makes it an easy way for parents to identify if a child is having tooth problems since the child may be unable to clearly articulate the pain.
Why are teeth sensitive?
The reason teeth become sensitive to sugar is fairly simple. The outer portion of the tooth consists of enamel. The enamel is the strong shell that prevents anything from coming in contact with the interior of the tooth or the tooth nerves. If the enamel begins to wear away through daily habits like biting on things that are too hard, brushing with too much force, eating too much sugar, or consuming acidic foods and drinks, the enamel will become thin in certain areas. These areas will then become much more sensitive than normal.
This means that when someone eats candy that is high in sugar acid content, the nerves inside the tooth may be exposed to it, causing tooth sensitivity or even sharp pain. This most often happens due to tooth decay, making tooth sensitivity or sharp pain a clear indicator that it is time to schedule an appointment for a kids dental check-up.
The examination
During the exam, we will carefully inspect each tooth and look for soft spots or areas of decay. Once identified, we can begin to restore the tooth structure. If there are only soft spots in the teeth but not full-blown decay, we sometimes apply fluoride to the area as the only treatment. This is because fluoride can strengthen the tooth's enamel so that it can fight decay.
However, if the child is suffering from dental decay, however minor, we will need to remove the decayed portion of the tooth. This is typically done with a dental drill or laser. We will numb the tooth prior to getting started so that a child will remain comfortable. After the decay has been removed the area is cleaned.
At that point, we will use a dental filling to restore the tooth. As a kid's dental office, we generally use tooth-colored fillings so that the restoration blends in with the natural tooth structure. this way, there will be no way to tell the child has dental decay. We can complete all of this procedure during the same appointment. Once the tooth is restored we can answer questions and provide additional information on how to prevent tooth sensitivity in the future.
