Create Your Own Tooth Fairy Traditions
Developing traditions is an important aspect of building family dynamics. The traditions you establish while your children are young will stay with them as they grow older and become fond memories. As a local dentist, we are always encouraging parents to include oral health in their traditions. While this is certainly not something you think of when planning for family meals and holidays, it is equally important. If your children can develop an affinity for being healthy while they are young, it is highly likely that they will continue to make healthy decisions as they grow older. We are cognizant, however, that these traditions need to incorporate an element of fun. Otherwise, children will be less inclined to participate.
- Read stories together. Reading a book with your child can be a magical moment. Children look forward to special reading time because it means one-on-one attention and lots of cuddles. If you buy books that talk about the Tooth Fairy, save them for when your child loses a tooth. This way, they can be part of an exciting tradition that your child can look forward to.
- Take pictures. Create a special tradition you are equally excited about. Take a picture of your child every time they lose a tooth. Document their silly grin so you can develop fun memories as well. Put the picture underneath your pillow with the two they lost and pretend the Tooth Fairy is the one who wants to see it. You can then have a special photo or memory book where you keep all the pictures and their lost teeth and give it to them when they grow up.
- Give them a gift. Skip the money and give your child something they can use, or do both. As a Kids Dentist , we recommend that you give them a new toothbrush, floss, and toothpaste every time one of their teeth falls out. Pick a special cartoon character and make it fun. By giving them a prize, it will reinforce the benefits of healthy teeth.
As a Kids Dentist , we're not only the resident tooth fairy for your children — we are also yours. Sometimes you need a little bit of assistance, and that is what we are here to provide. If your children are not cooperating by brushing and flossing like you ask them to, call our office and schedule an appointment. We can serve as your backup and encourage your children to listen to your request for a positive oral health routine.
