When you bring your child to our office for a kids dental checkup, you can expect that they will have a fun time and enjoy having their teeth examined. We love working with young children and our patients sense this. That means that kids actually like being here and are excited to visit. We are confident that your child will as well.
What We Do During a Kids Dental Checkup
We will begin the appointment by chatting with your child and getting to know them. This is important for establishing a rapport and helping your child to relax and feel safe and comfortable. Next, we will look inside of their mouth and begin the examination process. This is done slowly and gently and your child will not even notice that we are poking and prodding to determine whether or not they have tooth decay. This is because we are incredibly gentle while examining them. Next, we will clean their teeth to remove plaque and tartar and ensure that nothing is trapped in between teeth or hard to reach spaces. If we notice that your child is showing any signs of tooth decay, we will let you know at this time and make a suggestion regarding whether we can treat their decay at that appointment or if you should visit us for a second one.
Things We Will Discuss During Your Kids Dental Checkup
#1 Your child's eating habits.
We will probably ask questions about what your child eats and if we notice that they are suffering more decay than normal we might ask if they're eating a lot of sugar or drinking a lot of soda. Our goal is to provide you with suggestions so that you can help them to make healthy choices that will be good for their teeth and body.
#2 Your child's oral healthcare habits.
We want to know what your child is doing to keep their teeth clean at home. How often are they brushing and flossing and how do they do it? Learning this allows us to make recommendations for simple changes that you can make to improve their oral health. Very often it can be something as simple as changing their toothpaste or having them brush for an extra 30 seconds that can improve their oral health.
#3 Whether or not they play sports.
If your child plays sports this is a good thing because it means that they are active and getting exercise. However, sports also bring with them an inherent risk for dental damage. If your child plays a sport, let us know about it so that we can discuss their options for wearing a mouth guard. This is a simple way to ensure that they are safe while having fun.

We want to help your child have a beautiful smile that is also healthy. The best way for us to do so is to clean and examine their teeth at least twice per year. If you have not yet scheduled your child's dental visit, we encourage you to call our office and do so today.
