Emergency Dental Care for Kids: Services We Offer

Emergency Dental CareAt our dental office, we provide emergency dental care for kids. Emergency dental care is an important aspect of our available services because there is no way to guarantee when or if a child will suffer a dental emergency. Unfortunately, many dentists do not offer this service and it leaves patients in a bind when something occurs and there is no time to schedule an appointment several weeks out. We invite our regular patients and anyone in the community to call with an emergency. We will do our best to accommodate by seeing the patient the same day or as soon as possible.

Things included in emergency dental care for kids

When a patient comes in for emergency care, we take immediate action. First, over the phone, our staff will ask questions to ascertain the nature of the emergency. At this time, we may provide advice for how to temporarily help the situation until the child can come in for treatment. For example, if a child loses a permanent tooth, we often encourage parents to put that tooth in a cup of milk and bring it in to see if we can re-attach the tooth.

If a child is seriously bleeding, we may recommend using gauze or a cool cloth until they can be brought in. These are just a few of the tips we may suggest during that call. Once here, we will carefully examine the patient and determine the root cause of the injury.  We may also take X-rays when necessary. Afterward, we will make a thorough recommendation on how to treat the child quickly to alleviate their discomfort.

The treatment we recommend will be based on the type of emergency but often includes:

    • Removing decay or infection
    • Filling cavities
    • Completing root canals
    • Extractions
    • Dental restorations

We discuss treatment options with parents to ensure that everyone is on the same page with how to proceed.

    Reasons to schedule an appointment

We encourage parents to watch for the signs of a dental emergency and learn when to schedule an appointment. These include:

A child complaining of a toothache

The most important thing a parent can do is to listen to their child since they are on the front lines and are typically able to communicate how they feel.

    Sensitivity while eating

Even if a child's tooth does not hurt all the time, if there is sensitivity when eating it can be a sign of decay or an infection.

    Crack or chip

It can be difficult to tell if a tooth is cracked or chipped. However, if there are obvious signs of this, then it is enough of a reason to bring a child in immediately.

    Accident

After being in an accident while playing sports, wrestling at home or being in a car wreck, dental damage can occur and this is something that we should diagnose and treat immediately.
