Maximize Insurance Benefits by Visiting a Kids Dentist
There may still be time to visit the kids dentist before year-end. We recommend that you do not wait to see if there are any appointments available with our office. This is important because it can help you to save money by maximizing your insurance benefits.
Insurance
Typically, insurance benefits will pay for all dental care for kids. This includes annual dental cleanings and examinations. We recommend that a child visit the dentist for a teeth cleaning twice per year. If this has not happened during the year, the insurance benefits will not roll over to the next year. In other words, if these benefits are not used, they are lost at the end of the year. Since a teeth cleaning is so important for oral health and may not cost a dime, it is important for parents to schedule these appointments and to try and do so before the end of the year.
However, if it is not possible to schedule an appointment in time due to a busy schedule, it is still wise to make an appointment for a teeth cleaning in January. Again, the insurance will typically pay for the appointment in full so it is a good way to start the year with a healthy smile without spending any additional money.
Reasons to schedule a teeth cleaning with a kids dentist
In our clinic, we like to remind parents that dentistry is different than visiting a doctor. This is because parents typically bring a child to the doctor when they are feeling sick with a fever, flu or other health problems. With the dentist, it is better to bring them in when a child does not have any problems or complaints. This is because we offer preventative dental care.
By cleaning a child's teeth twice per year we can prevent things like toothaches and dental damage. This is because we can remove plaque and tartar that is built up on the teeth. Plaque will secrete acid that begins to attack the teeth and lead to problems like tooth decay and dental infections. By removing it, it will not have the opportunity to do so.
Treating problems early
Another benefit to visiting us on a regular basis is that we can identify and treat problems as soon as they develop. For example, dental decay typically will start out very small, be unnoticeable and not cause any pain. By catching it early, we can remove the decayed portion of the tooth quickly, place a dental filling and send a child on their way before they ever experience a toothache. However, if a child does not visit us until they are in pain, it is likely that they are struggling with a more serious oral health problem and may need something like a root canal or extraction. This is not in their best interest.
It is better for a child to visit the dentist when they are not in pain in order to prevent oral pain.
