Emergency Dental Care for Kids and Steps to Take in an Emergency

Emergency Dental CareWe offer emergency dental care for kids because we understand that there is no way to plan for something like a chipped tooth. No matter how much you prepare, accidents can happen. It is common for children to damage their teeth while snacking, playing on the playground at school, playing games and sports, or even wrestling at home. You never know what is going to cause a tooth to chip or crack or what will cause your child to wake up with a throbbing toothache. The bottom line is that if they do, we are here to help.

We accept last-minute appointments and will find any availability we can to ensure that young children do not have to live with that discomfort any longer than necessary.

Emergency Dental Care for Kids: Reasons to Come In

We encourage you to call our office and schedule an appointment if:

    • Your child wakes up with a throbbing toothache or complains of significant dental pain while eating
    • You can see a visible crack in their tooth
    • They have chipped their tooth
    • A tooth is knocked out (different from falling out naturally)
    • Their gums are bleeding excessively

    Immediate Steps to Take

If your child has any emergency dental symptoms, we want to see them right away. However, we understand that in many emergencies, steps need to be taken prior to the drive over. After all, if your child is in terrible pain or bleeding profusely, these things need to be addressed immediately. With that in mind, here are some of the steps you can take when an emergency strikes.

    • Have your child rinse their mouth with warm water. Very often, this will allow them to spit out any blood and make it possible for you to look inside their mouth to see what is happening. If the trauma is mild, the bleeding will ease and you will have a better sense of what is going on.
    • Apply ice. Use an icepack or cold compress to help your child feel better. This can be applied to their face near where the dental damage is. Ice can help prevent or reduce swelling and discomfort.
    • Take ibuprofen. You can help your child be more comfortable by giving them pain medication, so long as you do not give them aspirin. Since aspirin is a blood thinner, this can make the problem worse.
    • Apply gauze. If the bleeding is severe and not stopping, look for your first aid kit and pull out some gauze. Placing it in the area that is bleeding can help stop the flow of blood, and while it may be slightly uncomfortable, it will help your child not feel so anxious. Most children become fearful at the sight of their own blood.
    • Visit our office. Head to our dental clinic as quickly as possible so we can treat your child.
