Dental Checkups for Children: Appointments Your Child Can Look Forward To
Dental checkups for children do not have to be boring or scary. Since we love kids, our staff works to make every appointment an adventure and something your child can look forward to. If your child has previously been to the dentist and did not enjoy their visit, we encourage you to call our office and give it another try. It is critical that children receive dental care because tooth decay is incredibly common and something most children will suffer from. As such, not bringing them to the dentist can lead to serious health problems. Fortunately, bringing them to the right dentist can make all the difference and can change how your child feels about dental care.
We Explain Everything During Dental Checkups for Children
Realizing how much we explain the process to a child can significantly impact how comfortable they feel. Many providers make the mistake of trying to move too quickly and going immediately to the examination or cleaning phase of the appointment. We don't do this. Instead, we take our time getting to know our young patients, and we explain everything we are going to do and talk about what we're going to use to do it.
For example, we will show your child "Mr. Thirsty" and talk about how he will suck up the water so they do not need to spit or swallow while their teeth are being cleaned. We may even let them touch some of the dental tools or allow them to help us so they feel like an empowered participant, rather than someone stuck in the dental chair. We will even talk about the flavors of paste we will use, so they can become excited to try it.
By discussing each and every aspect of what we are doing and the tools we are doing it with, we can turn the appointment from an unfamiliar experience into one your child feels confident about. It ultimately comes down to information and empowerment, and just like adults want to be informed and feel in control, so do children. It is a mistake to think otherwise.
We Have Fun with Our Young Patients
There is no need for your child to not have fun at the dentist. This is a new atmosphere, and that means taking a trip to the dentist can be like going on an adventure. There are new sights and sounds, cool equipment they can look at, a special chair to sit in, and even prizes at the end. By having fun with your child, we can help them go on an adventure rather than simply helping them remain still or calm. It's a different mindset but one we find to be incredibly effective. As a parent, you can help by letting us know about the things your child is passionate about. For example, if they have a favorite cartoon character or sports team, let us know so we can talk about it with them while working on their teeth.
