5 Summertime Health Tips from a Dentist for Kids

When visiting a dentist for kids, it is important to ask questions. Doing so will make it easier to understand how to keep your child's teeth healthy and in excellent condition. We help many families to improve their oral health and are happy to share tips and tricks for ways to keep teeth cavity-free. Here are five of our favorite ones that you can incorporate this summer.

Five tips for cavity-free teeth for kids!

    1. Drink water all day long

Water is so good for the body and also for the teeth. During the summer, it is easy to become dehydrated, especially when outdoors in the heat while swimming and playing. Children are notorious for not drinking enough water no matter the season. During the summer months, this is certainly a health concern. We recommend that parents buy their children a fun water bottle that is easy to carry and drink from. It should be refilled throughout the day. Children who continuously drink water have a good chance of improving their oral hygiene as well. Water washes away food particles, can improve their breath and prevent dry mouth which are all things that are important for oral health.

    2. Chew gum with xylitol

It is not always possible for children to brush teeth after meals or snacks. This means that food particles and sugar can remain on the teeth and increase the likelihood of them developing tooth decay. Parents can work to counteract this by carrying gum that contains xylitol. Chewing it after snacking can help to strengthen the teeth and reduce the risk of developing decay. In this case, improving oral health is as easy as chewing gum.

    3. Stay away from anything acidic

Sugar is not the only thing that is dangerous for teeth. Anything that is high in acid content is going to begin to erode the enamel on the teeth. As it does, the teeth are weakened, prone to breakage and sensitivity and also more likely to develop tooth decay. Things that are high in acidity include soda, juice, sour candy and citrus fruits.

    4. Brush with a fluoride toothpaste

Teeth take quite a beating. Every time a child eats and brushes their teeth, it is possible that they are doing something to weaken their enamel. Fluoride helps to strengthen it by re-mineralizing the teeth. We give children fluoride treatments in our office, but between visits, we recommend brushing with a fluoride toothpaste.

    5. Visit a dentist for kids

One of our favorite tips is to visit our dental office twice a year. We can clean a child's teeth, examine them and treat any signs of tooth decay that we find. These biannual visits are one of the most important things parents can do to help their children maintain good oral health.

    Schedule an appointment

If your child has not been to the dentist in the last six months, now is the right time to schedule an appointment with our dentist for kids. We are happy to examine their teeth, provide any necessary treatments and help your child to maintain good oral health as they grow.
